We knew it could do more. That is why we commissioned further testing. The BOLL 1:1 Epoxy Primer achieved C5M in tests carried out by an accredited laboratory. What does this result mean in practice, and what benefits does it offer to painters and mechanics?
Proper corrosion protection is crucial for the durability of bodywork and paint repairs. Moisture, oxygen and salt can lead to the gradual degradation of unprotected metal surfaces, which is why it is important to use a product that effectively limits the impact of these factors.
BOLL 1:1 Epoxy Primer is a two-component product based on next-generation epoxy resins. After curing, it forms a durable, chemically resistant coating that acts as a barrier, preventing moisture and oxygen from reaching the substrate. Its high adhesion to various surfaces makes the primer suitable for demanding applications where both corrosion protection and the durability of subsequent layers of the paint system are important.
One primer, several application possibilities
One of the key advantages of BOLL 1:1 Epoxy Primer is the ability to adapt the application method to the specific repair process.
The product can be used in three versions:
• as a surfacer,
• as a surfacer and insulating primer,
• in a wet-on-wet system.
The choice of the appropriate version depends on the amount of epoxy thinner used. This means that the same product can be used at different stages of surface preparation, with the application method adapted to the requirements of a specific repair.
The primer can be applied directly to metal substrates, among other applications, and can also be used to isolate polyester putty. In practice, this makes it possible to use it both as part of the corrosion protection system for the substrate and as an insulating layer before the subsequent stages of the painting process.
What does C5M mean?
Corrosivity categories define how aggressive the environment is in which the protected component operates. C5M indicates a very high corrosivity level. It applies to outdoor environments with high humidity and an aggressive industrial atmosphere (e.g. chemical plants), as well as coastal areas with high salt exposure.
In practice, this is an environment where corrosion protection is particularly demanding, and the coating used must effectively limit the impact of factors that accelerate the development of rust.
What does this mean for the painter?
The certification is primarily confirmation of the product’s protective properties under demanding conditions.
For the painter, this means greater confidence that the primer used provides an effective corrosion barrier and can serve as the basis for a reliable and durable repair. This is particularly important when repairing metal components, where proper substrate protection determines the durability of the entire process. The epoxy primer is not merely a layer used to prepare the surface for subsequent products – it also functions as an insulating and protective layer. An additional advantage of the BOLL product is the possibility of working in a wet-on-wet system within a specified time window, which helps reduce the number of operations and shorten the surface preparation process.
C5M – confirmation, not a promise
When it comes to corrosion protection, it is not only the manufacturer’s declaration that matters, but also how that declaration is verified. That is why BOLL decided to commission independent testing to verify the capabilities of the 1:1 Epoxy Primer in relation to a higher corrosivity category. C5M is further confirmation of the quality and capabilities of the 1:1 Epoxy Primer – a product developed to provide effective protection for metal surfaces even in very demanding environments.
